about
The song is about kids of the fifties and sixties who were forbidden to listen to Rhythm n Blues, Rock n roll in their own homes. In order to listen to their music of choice,They would sneak a transistor radio to bed with them and listen away from the disapproving ears of their parents. The song also reflects the times leading up to the civil rights movement and in particular, where black and white musicians would play together defying the rules of the establishment.
lyrics
The changing sound of the airwaves.
Like nothing heard before.
projections of shameful outrage.
from both sides was being ignored.
Something they thought that would not last.
That ship in the night that did not pass.
They tried to hide the secret chords, they couldn't keep under wraps
But you can't adorn your dancing shoes.
or shake on down to those Rock n Blues.
But we will listen under the bedtime clothes.
The white sheet kids will never lose.
And we always could depend on you.
To play those beats to get us through.
The white sheet kids will never lose.
The white sheet kids were me and you.
Keep to yourselves, Don't mix with them.
But don't you know that we have no conflict with them.
The more you push the people away, they come back like a storm.
And the crazes they will fly.
To bring about new highs.
To chase away all the troubles of the day.
So put on your new dancing shoes.
Shake on down, now you cannot lose.
Cos culture moves where culture grooves.
The white sheet kids took on the Blues.
And we always could depend on you.
To play those beats to get us through.
The white sheet kids will never lose.
The white sheet kids were me and you.
